STATEMENT | Honoring the Legacy of Fr. Amado “Picx” Picardal: A Beacon of Human Rights Advocacy

The Union of Peoples’ Lawyers in Mindanao (UPLM) and the Free Legal Assistance Group (FLAG) deeply mourn the passing on of Fr. Amado “Picx” Picardal.

Until his untimely demise, Fr. Picx is the main pillar of the collective and cohesive leadership of the Coalition Against Summary Execution (CASE). This Davao City-based human rights organization has been dedicated to documenting cases of summary executions and extrajudicial killings, particularly on the war on drugs, including those of vulnerable children in street situations. CASE’s close collaboration with human rights advocates like UPLM and FLAG exemplifies the collective effort needed to confront these grave injustices.

A survivor of Martial Law and a revered human rights icon, Fr. Picx was affectionately known as the “biking priest.” He fearlessly stood against summary killings perpetrated by State forces, with his advocacy starting right at the ground zero of EJK – Davao City. His relentless crusade for justice forced him to leave Davao City for his own safety, yet he continued his mission undeterred, championing the cause of human rights.

While we find solace in knowing that Fr. Picx has found eternal rest, his legacy as a tireless human rights advocate endures. The UPLM and FLAG are committed to honoring his memory by intensifying our efforts to defend the voiceless and the defenseless. We will continue to “pedal harder” in the fight for justice and human rights, inspired by Fr. Picx’s indomitable spirit.

Daghang salamat po and rest in power, Fr. Picx. Your courage and dedication will forever inspire us.
