Man dies, 100 houses burned down in dawn fire

A TEENAGER died when a fire burned down about 100 houses in Barangay 23-C Monday dawn.

Senior Fire Officer 1 Padang Jovil of the Central Fire Station said in an interview that the victim was Arham Usman, 19, who was died while trying to rescue his younger brother as the fire broke out early that morning.

The incident also left about 500 families and resulted in about P700,000 in damages.

Jovil said a mosquito coil placed on top of an egg tray caused the fire at the house of Cocoy Batara and that it quickly spread because most of the houses were made of light materials.

“It took time for us to put off the fire since we had a difficulty in entering the area,” Jovil said as it took the fire unit four to suppress it.

Those who lost their homes were brought to the gymnasium while others decided to take temporary shelter with relatives.
