UP Mindanao to expand its facilities

THE UNIVERSITY of the Philippines Mindanao is ramping up its expansion plans, including building more facilities and hiring more personnel with more college courses to be opened in the future.

During the Kapihan sa PIA at NCCC Victoria Plaza on May 3, Rene A. Estremera, UPMin public relations officer, said they needed to increase their capacity by adding more personnel, faculty members, and classrooms, as well as new courses proposed by the university’s departments.

“We need to take in more para yun ang let’s say obligation or mandate ng university, in our constituent university dito sa Mindanao so that we could better contribute to our regional improvement,” he said.

Estremera said UPMin has been working on ladderized education, such as the Associate in Arts, a two-year program that does not require taking or passing the UP college admission test (UPCAT).

The campus currently has an Associate in Arts in Sports with plans to open an Associate in Arts in Entrepreneurship.

“These are some of the avenues or ways na yung ating university maka reach out, maka help more people in the region,” he said.

He also observed a steady increase in the number of applicants in the UPCAT.

“Ang target ng ating university, our local University of the Philippines Mindanao, is to reach an enrollment of around 5,000 on or before 2029. The reason for this is that para maka contribute ang ating university ng more developed, skilled professionals sa ating mga regions in Mindanao,” he said.
