The City Council is crafting an ordinance requiring all the establishments in the Chinatown area to have a Chinese-themed façade.
City Councilor Myrna Dalodo Ortiz, of the council’s committee on tourism and beautification, authored the proposed ordinance.
The councilors passed the proposal on its first reading in last Tuesday’s regular session. It will now undergo public hearings.
The proposal is based on the resolution of the Davao City Chinatown Development Council (DCCDC).
The DCCDC resolution was forwarded to the City Council, through the letter of the City Tourism Operation Office (CTOO) head Regina Rosa Tecson last month.
In the resolution, Susan Isabel Reta, a DCCDC member and former councilor, noted that most establishments in the city’s Chinatown area don’t have Chinese-themed façade.
The Chinatown area is the only tourism developmental zone within the central downtown area because others are mostly in the hinterlands in the city.
Said to be the biggest Chinatown in the country, the Davao Chinatown covers a 44-hectare area in four barangays in downtown district.
With four archways, the area is bordered by Santa Ana Avenue, Monteverde Avenue, Ramon Magsaysay Street and Leon Garcia Street.
