Davao jail uses digital tech to connect inmates and families

The Davao City Jail in Ma-a, Talomo District has implemented the “e-Dalaw” system, taking advantage of video conferencing technology to connect inmates with families.

The jail facility has been on lockdown since Mayor Sara Duterte signed the executive order placing Davao City under community quarantine. As a result, visiting hours were suspended.

Jail Insp. Edo Lobenia, the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) XI spokesperson, said they thought of the alternative so that persons deprived of liberty and their families can still communicate with each other amid the pandemic.

“And it is one way of assurance that the PDL is in good condition under our management,” Lobenia said.

He said the inmates are allowed at least 10 to 20 minutes to have a video conference with their respective families.

“It was done since the suspension of the visitation,” he added.

For now, there are five units available for the inmates but they are trying to add more. He also said that inmates inside are in good condition. “They are okay and under monitoring, especially on their health,” he further said.
