Abalos pushes for stronger food security programs and support for farmers

Former DILG Secretary Benhur Abalos highlighted the importance of food security and sustainable agricultural practices during the Alyansa press conference in Iloilo City. Drawing from his experience as a former mayor, Abalos shared a successful local initiative that provided direct assistance to farmers in his city.

He called on other local government units to adopt similar programs that directly support farmers and eliminate the role of middlemen. He emphasized that local governments have a critical role in creating a stable market for agricultural products, which would help farmers achieve sustainable livelihoods.

Abalos also proposed institutionalizing financial support for farmers, particularly through accessible and affordable credit programs. He highlighted the need to expand crop insurance coverage beyond rice and corn to include other crops that are vulnerable to climate change.

Additionally, he advocated for providing scholarships and vocational training to the children of farmers to help improve their long-term prospects.

PR
