The city government is proposing a sister city agreement with Seoul, South Korea based on the advice of the Philippine Embassy to the trade delegation that visited the Korean city last week.
Christian Cambaya, Davao City Investment Promotion Center (DCIPC) Investor Assistance and Servicing Unit head, said Seoul government officials were initially planning to establish agreements with Manila and Cebu.
“We just came back (from the four-day roadshow), so right now the international relations board is having a meeting and one their agenda is the Seoul and Davao City sister city agreement,” Cambaya said during the Wednesdays @ Habi at Kape – Abreeza.
Cambaya said they already responded to the advice of the Philippine Embassy saying the city is very keen to forge a sisterhood agreement with Seoul.
“On the typical arrangement of having a sister city agreement is one for trade, commerce, and culture because Korea is positioning itself as cultural hub. They are active on the traditional performances in their area,” he said.
To further strengthen ties between the two cities, Cambaya said they are also pushing for the possibility of establishing a direct flight sooner since about 8,000 Korean tourists visit the city every year.
“We want to have a direct flight of Incheon and Davao and seriously pushing it in partnership with Department of Tourism,” he said.
Cambaya added that they are hopeful to establish a direct flight before the end of President Rodrigo Duterte’s term.
