ROUGH CUTS | Yesterday for Mothers, today for Motherland

WE HAVE this chat group whose members are retired, resigned, or former employees of Davao Light and Power Co. Also included are the spouses of some.

Yesterday, we got one of the best and relevant posts ever shared to us for the years that that we allowed to be drawn into active use of social media primarily to update us of societal developments, although at times we are “scammed” into believing things far or just half truths.

We have this post by Mrs. Perla Kwan, wife of Engr. Rodger Kwan, a retired manager of Davao Light’s Purchasing Department. Couple Rodger and Perla own and run the famous Precious International School of Davao at the GSIS Heights in Matina.

Ms. Kwan’s post was some kind of a reminder that May 11 is the “Sunday for all mothers…today, Monday, is for our Motherland.” It also urged everyone to pray for a clean and fair election.

Indeed yes, today some 60 million qualified voters all over the country will troop to the polling precincts to elect a new batch of senators, congressmen, provincial governors, vice governors and board members, as well as city and municipal mayors and councilors. Those who will be elected will be part of governance until another set of elected officials will come in after the 2028 national and local polls.

Considering the present political divide that is prevailing in the country today, we believe that what is shared to us and perhaps with all our chat group members and a number of Ms. Kwan’s friends is worth taking into a very serious consideration. We should not be carried away by rhetoric, by deceptive accusations, by theatrics, by twisted interpretations of things or even body language of certain politicians.

We encourage every voter to take a serious discernment of the candidate’s personality, behavior and educational qualifications as well as his or her readiness to take on the job. The voters should not limit their choices of candidates on the name they carry, or on the popularity they have acquired in some other fields like those in the entertainment industry, or their being sons or daughters of this and that person.

Of course, it is now admitted that to veer away from this seemingly established political set-up in our country is already close to impossible. For how can the Filipinos do away with such a scheme when those who are quick to manifest their desire to run are scions of the ruling clans; or that their incumbent relatives are quick to endorse their scions to be included in the official line-up.

Then we also have those very qualified individuals for the various elective positions. But they are too unwilling to cast their lot in the political derby either for lack of resources, absence of “connections” to the political gods as to who shall compose the ticket, or their belief that winning as “outsider” of the ruling party, or mainstream opposition is a remote possibility.

Thus, in this situation the electorate has no other option but to make their choices from those who are with the administration or with the opposition.

And again comes this shared reminder from Ms. Kwan that this Monday’s election is for our Motherland. It is therefore imperative that we pray for guidance in making our choices about who to vote for.

Should we be goaded to vote by partisan consideration it is not remote that we may have contributed our share in the deterioration of the governance of our country. Should this happen we cannot have any way of dodging such irresponsibility.

So, as our voters go to the polling precincts today, let them be guided by the reminder we have shared to all our readers here and vote for the most qualified candidate regardless of which political group they are with.

What is important is that the voters, after thorough discernment of the candidates, feel that he or she or they are the most deserving and are really after the good of our Motherland.

Now, let us fulfill our solemn mandate of electing the officials who will run the various levels of government in our country in the next three years or so.
