ROUGH CUT | So much rains but we have no water

There is this common saying, “When it rains, it pours.”

Meaning, when the rain is strong, there is abundance of water deposited in the aquifer and on the ground surface depositories.

But in our rural residence in Talandang, Tugbok district, the saying appears to have little “innovation.”

Yes, in our place our experience has it that every time it rains and it pours, we end up without water. Our supply comes from the Davao City Water District (DCWD) distribution facility located in Biao Joaquin, roughly two and a half kilometers away from our house.

The latest of these incidents or water service interruptions, was only yesterday morning. But on the night of Tuesday, strong rains fell in our place and in the uplands of Calinan district. When we woke up the next morning (Wednesday) our faucets in the house were spewing air. The water loss lasted until 10 a.m. yesterday. Thankfully.

Can we asked for enlightenment on this water service problem in our place from the DCWD people, specifically from JC Bogart?

We thought this problem of lack of water supply specially for consumers in the city’s north sector, has already been addressed with a multi-billion bulk water supply project that we learned is already operational.

So self-confessed member of the so-called Davao Death Squad (DDS) Edgar Matobato who seemed to have gone into oblivion after he testified in the Senate regarding the so-called extra-judicial killings during the previous administration, is now outside of the country under an assumed name together with his common law wife and two step children?

In other words, the person who is expected to be a star witness against the former President in a very likely case of crime against humanity with the International Criminal Court (ICC), is very much alive in all those close to a decade of dodging the authorities and his former bosses and co-members in the DDS. He was after all, able to secure the support of the Catholic Church which provided him and his family a home in an undisclosed location.

With his apparently carefully planned flight abroad, very possibly in The Netherlands, according to former Sen Leila De Lima, Matobato could have already gone to the headquarters of the ICC where he and his family could have been safely taken care of.

So, other than Matobato’s sworn affidavit re his public confession, his physical presence is likely to give more teeth and muscle to the ICC in its effort to get the former President and Davao City mayor.

But will all of these be enough to get the ICC into issuing an arrest warrant against the former Philippine President? And considering that the Philippines has withdrawn its membership with the ICC, although debatable – will there be no impediments in serving the same to the also then mayor of the city? And can the ICC’s own people serve the arrest warrant? Or, do they have to use law enforcers from other international organizations for the warrant’s effective enforcement?

Several Davao City streets will be closed on January 11, 12 and 13 in connection with the planned peace rally of the Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) on the 13th.

The organizers told the Police that some five hundred thousand INC members from Regions XI and 12 are expected to troop to the San Pedro Square in Davao City. Well, the people in the city have to make sacrifices in terms of temporary loss of convenience in accomplishing transactions in offices along San Pedro st.

After all, the INC activity is supposedly intended to have peace reign all over the country. But will the rally really be for peace? Will it not become a venue for enmity among people of different political persuasion?

The People are worth reminding that a group is claiming that it is a rally that could trigger a “People’s Power” that will eventually lead to the President’s departure from Palace. And this group identifying themselves the “new opposition” does not have any qualms claiming the INC is supportive of its acknowledged leader?

Can the INC hold its ground on making it really indeed a rally for peace? “Let us to see.”
