EDITORIAL |The coastal road as space for fitness on a Sunday

SUNDAYS on the coastal road, when vehicles are barred, transform that long stretch of scenic highway into a haven for fitness enthusiasts and those seeking to reconnect with nature, rejuvenate, or prepare for the week ahead. It has become a cherished public space where people can enjoy our lovely coastline, prioritize their wellbeing, or simply people-watch and soak in the vibrant spirit of community. Entering from the Tulip Drive roundabout, the sight of cyclists gliding along the smooth asphalt, joggers pounding the pavement, and families strolling hand-in-hand paints a vibrant picture of a city embracing a healthier lifestyle.

Access to spaces for physical activity is crucial for individual and community health. It combats sedentary lifestyles, reduces the risk of chronic diseases, and promotes mental wellbeing. The coastal road, free from the noise and fumes of traffic, offers a safe and inviting environment for people of all ages and fitness levels to exercise. The cool sea breeze, the calming sound of the waves, and the expansive view of the Davao Gulf create an atmosphere conducive to both physical and mental rejuvenation. It’s a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and reconnect with ourselves and our surroundings. Seeing our neighbors, friends, and fellow Davaoeños enjoying the coastal road creates a positive and uplifting atmosphere, reinforcing the idea that public spaces are for everyone, and that we all have a role to play in preserving and protecting them.

But the beauty and benefits of the coastal road are threatened by a growing concern: litter. While the majority of users appreciate and respect the space, a small minority carelessly discards their trash, marring the pristine environment and undermining the sustainability of this valuable resource. Plastic bottles, food wrappers, and other debris left behind not only detract from the aesthetic appeal of the coastal road but also pose a serious threat to the marine ecosystem.

We must remember that the privilege of enjoying this car-free space comes with responsibility. We urge everyone who uses the coastal road, especially during the early morning hours, to be mindful of their waste. Let us embrace the “Leave No Trace” principle: carry your trash with you and dispose of it properly. Encourage others to do the same. Small acts of individual responsibility can collectively make a huge difference.
