THE DEPARTMENT of Health XI revealed that as of December 2023, the treatment coverage for people living with HIV (PLHIV) is at 63% while the number of virally suppressed among those tested is at 90%.
In the Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas Presscon on July 2, DOH XI regional director Annabelle Yumang said this is part of their efforts to President Marcos’ directive to improve the country’s healthcare system. One significant step in achieving the department’s goal is to enhance HIV/AIDS treatment in the region.
In his second State of the Nation, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. expressed the need to prioritize investments in healthcare, which include a strategic and comprehensive plan to suppress the rise of tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS.
The department plans to continue its advocacy on HIV/AIDS through training and additional treatment hubs, particularly in the provinces.
When asked about the legitimacy of HIV kits online, Yumang explained, “Kung i-compare natin siya na ibili natin to something online, mahirap ang diagnosis. Mahirap talaga siya kasi sino mag-interpret sa patient? The diagnosis of HIV has a process. Patients must undergo a process to know its true result. It is really not advisable online.”
Instead, Yumang invited people to visit the nearest center to avail of the services. For instance, Davao City’s Reproductive Health and Wellness Center offers free testing and treatment for HIV.
“We are calling people who feel that they are HIV positive to go for treatment,” Yumang said.
DOH XI also improved public health facilities by adding 130 facilities from 2021 to the present. Among the notable achievements include the barangay health stations, which increased from 1,154 to 1,232, and the establishment of 50 social hygiene clinics.
Yumang said they remained firm in their focus to upgrade and improve the healthcare facilities in the region.
