WHILE subtle campaigning has been ongoing since last year’s Certificate of Candidacy filings, the official local campaign period is now underway. Political posters are already ubiquitous, filling every available space. As we actively participate in this democratic process, it’s vital to distinguish genuine commitment from mere rhetoric. This requires a keen focus on the character traits that define effective and ethical politicians, particularly in how they present their platforms.
We should look for desirable candidates whose values can serve as a benchmark for us, the electorate. Mayor Vico Sotto of Pasig, a young politician who has gained national recognition for his service, exemplifies transparency and accountability in his governance.
I’ve explored the positive values our politicians should embody to be authentic in their public service: integrity, competence, empathy, vision and strategic thinking, and accountability.
A politician’s past actions, transparent financial dealings, and adherence to ethical standards provide crucial insights into their character, that is, integrity. When explaining their platform, they should provide clear, verifiable data to support their claims. Their campaign promises should be grounded in realistic assessments, not populist fantasies. Look for consistency between their words and actions.
Competence in governing is essential. A leader must possess the knowledge, skills, and experience to address the community’s complex challenges. This includes understanding the nuances of healthcare systems, economic policies, and social welfare programs. We should examine their platforms to see if they grasp the issues and offer well-thought-out solutions rather than clichéd slogans. We should assess their ability to articulate clear, actionable plans and the long-term implications of their policies.
To truly serve the public good, leaders must be empathetic. They must understand and relate to the struggles of ordinary citizens, especially the marginalized and vulnerable. During platform presentations, empathetic leaders will speak with genuine concern and demonstrate a deep understanding of the human impact of their policies. They will prioritize the people’s needs over political expediency.
Vision and strategic thinking are crucial for navigating the complexities of modern governance. Leaders must possess a clear vision for the future and the ability to develop long-term strategies to achieve their goals. When explaining their platforms, they should articulate a coherent vision, outlining their priorities and the steps they will take to achieve them. They should be able to anticipate potential challenges and develop contingency plans.
Above all, accountability is paramount. Leaders must be held accountable for their actions and decisions. They should be transparent, open to criticism, and willing to admit mistakes. When presenting their platforms, they should clearly define their performance metrics and commit to regular public reporting. They should also demonstrate a willingness to engage in constructive dialogue with citizens and stakeholders.
Choosing wise leaders is an investment in our nation’s future. By carefully evaluating the character, competence, and vision of our politicians, we can ensure that our leaders are truly committed to serving the public good and building a healthier, more equitable society. Learning how to choose leaders who can steer our country to a better place is what matters.
