THE COAST Guard Substation Davao Oriental successfully rescued a 16-year-old fisherman who went missing in Pujada Bay after his boat capsized due to rough seas.
The incident occurred on Dec. 14, 2024, when the fisherman, Bruce Torreta Geberola, ventured out to sea for fishing activities. However, his boat capsized due to sudden strong winds and large waves.
Alarmed by his son’s absence, Wilfredo Geberola sought assistance from the Coast Guard Sub-Station Pujada at 6:40 p.m.
A swift search and rescue operation was immediately launched, involving personnel from both Coast Guard Station Davao Oriental and CGSS Pujada. Utilizing a rigid boat and a motorized banca, the search team combed the waters of Pujada Bay.
By 9:50 PM, the missing fisherman was located in the vicinity of Oak Island. He reported that he had been struggling to stay afloat after his boat capsized.
Coast Guard District Southeastern Mindanao commended the rescue team for their swift and professional response.
The district also urged all fisherfolk to prioritize safety by monitoring weather conditions and exercising caution before venturing to sea.
CGDSEM spokesperson Lt Commander Angel Tobias said the incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of the sea and the importance of preparedness and safety measures for those who rely on the ocean for their livelihood.
