SOME of those who underwent non-scalpel vasectomy (NSV) in the city are as young as 18 years old, the City Health Office Population Division reported on Thursday.
Justice Mindanao Rasgo, CHO NSV coordinator, said the primary reason for the teen acceptors is the fear of the responsibility of rearing children.
“Naa na tay mga 18 years old. Ilahang rason dili sila gusto og bata, dili nila makita ilang kaugalingon mag-buhi og bata (Their reason is they don’t want kids. They could not see themselves raising children),” Rasgo said during the iSpeak media forum.
He reported that the trend was observed after the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Nakita siguro nila unsa kalisod ang pandemic. So, isa ka reason nga lisod magbuhi og bata ana nga panahon (They probably realized how gruelling it was during the pandemic. So, it was tough raising a kid that time),” he added.
From January to October 2024, the city registered 101 men who underwent the procedure, which almost surpassed last year’s total of 107. The figure does not include the 22 individuals who were pre-scheduled to undergo NSV in the last week of November.
It can be noted that last year’s 107 represented a 44.59% increase from 74 individuals in 2022.
The official stressed this could only mean there is greater awareness among men of their responsibility in family planning. NSV is a non-intrusive family planning method as it takes only about 15 minutes and does not require longer healing and recovery, unlike tubal ligation for women.
