Around 4,000 trees were planted in Barangay Marahan, Marilog District and areas downstream as part of the effort of the local government to protecting the environment and prevent natural disasters.
The massive tree-planting activity was led by the Davao City Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro), in line with Proclamation 237, declaring June of each year as Environment Month.
“This activity is a big help to protect our land, especially in preventing landslide and floods. This is a very simple step in taking good care of our environment,” CENRO head Marivic Reyes said.
Marilog is among the landslide-prone areas identified by the Davao City Disaster and Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO), along with Guadalupe, Matina Crossing, Marilog and the hinterlands of the city. These areas are being closely monitored right now.
Just this month, another landslide was monitored in Marilog due to heavy rainfall, which isolated residents of Sitio Contract, Datu Sulamay.
Reyes said planting trees is just one of the many other ways in protecting the environment. There are other initiatives such as segregating wastes and disposing of them properly, which could be done at home.
“We should take good care of our environment not just through tree planting since our environment is very vital to each of us. Our daily lives depend on our environment,” she said.
She also reminded the public that taking good care of the environment should not be a once-a-year activity.
