Wanderlust | Let’s get physical – at home

To survive this ongoing home quarantine, experts say we need to watch what we eat, drink lots of water, ensure good hygiene, and stay fit.

But how can one stay fit inside a tiny, say, 29 square meter room? With a lot of determination, strong WiFi connection and Facebook account, anyone now can.

Fitness instructors and health buffs have become more created in this time of quarantine that some have found ways in keeping themselves – and others – in the pink of health.

Tata Debildos, a group fitness and Zumba instructor for 9 years now, gathered 15 of his colleagues, coming from as far as Panabo , Manila, Brunei Darussalam, Singapore, and even the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, to alternately lead group exercises online.

“We created a Facebook page called Happy to be FIT last March 23 to encourage my clients and friends to stay fit while staying at home,” she said.

The private Facebook page livestreams one hour cardio and dance exercises led by the said volunteer instructors.

“We do Zumba, aero, kickboxing and other routines that make everyone sweat. Due to the crisis, we need to be mentally and physically active to boost our immune system. But it must also be something that we will enjoy,” Debildos added.

Former University of Mindanao fitness instructor Niño Aparis Calamba agrees. Now a fitness instructor in the 34-year old Amore Fitness and Boutique Spa in Singapore, he believes that physical health and overall wellness is an essential key to combat sickness and vulnerability to the virus.

Along with his team of 5 Singaporeans, 4 Malaysians, and 4 Filipino instructors, they perform various exercise, such as basic aerobics, kick blitz, jazz, energy sculpt, pilates, stretch fit, Latin, and other easy to follow regimens, on livestream via their Facebook page for free.

“We want to help people, not just in Singapore, but also around the world. Exercise stimulates our mental capacity and emotional wellness especially in memorizing choreographies. It also helps spark happiness and satisfaction,” said Calamba, who’s backed with a 22 year fitness experience.

Licensed real estate broker and fitness enthusiast Raymund Labja Libre also gets his fitness motivation on and offline.

“Thankfully, I get a lot of help from friends who share with me their regimen,” he said.

Through his social media accounts, Libre, in turn, shares his 5 times weekly routine that involves burpees, push-up, situp, abs roller, jog in place, planking, and other workouts.

“It gives me more energy all day long while helping me shape my abs, biceps, and triceps with my 40 minute to an hour routines,” Libre said.

These people have shown that even without a gym or sets of gym equipment, one can still stay fit physically and mentally. The good news is that it’s never too late to start to get more physical activity into our sedentary lifestyle.
