The implementaion of a communal nursery for sustainable organic vegetable production in Barangay Tapak, Paquibato District is seen to reduce the malnutrition rate in the area.
In the data acquired from the City Health Office, Paquibato District topped the list of severely underweight/underweight with 13.8 prevalence rate, as well as stunted and severely stunted with 17.8.
The communal nursery is a result of the suggestion raised by the members and beneficiaries of the modified conditional cash transfer for indigenous People of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) XI.
“They suggested to establish communal nursery because they said they needed it so from that we made a proposal,” Rutchel T. Son, DSWD XI community facilitator told TIMES on Tuesday.
In the proposal, THE DSWD XI allocated P100,000 for the establishment of the project last March including all the planting materials.
The communal nursery will benefit 60 Lumads. However, Son said other residents were provided with vegetable seedlings by the City Agriculturist Office (CAO).
“They can plant this at school or at their homes as source of foods. If there’s an excess, they can sell it.
We already elected a treasurer and auditor for that. Soon, they can generate income and they will always have food available every day,” Son said.
