UM Law inks MOA with DTI on enhancing consumer’s access to legal redress

MCLE Dean Atty. Antonio B. Arellano (2nd from L) and DTI dity director Rachel S. Remitio (2nd from R) sign the Memorandum of Agreement.

THE UNIVERSITY of Mindanao College of Legal Education (UMCLE) signed the Memorandum of Agreement with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) on enhancing the consumer’s access to legal redress last October 11, 2023, at the University of Mindanao-Bolton Campus, Bolton Street, Davao City.

UMCLE was represented by its dean, Atty. Antonio B. Arellano, and Atty. Cloydie Mark A. Marcos,  Clinical Legal Education Program (CLEP) supervising lawyer.

Meanwhile, city director  Rachel S. Remitio and Atty. Ryan Armand L. Casabar, consumer protection division chief, represented the DTI.

The partnership commenced with a meeting between the UMCLE and the DTI last April 25, 2023, at the latter’s office. This was followed by a virtual meeting attended by Atty. Marcos and student representatives of UM’s Clinical Legal Education Program (CLEP) on September 20, 2023.

This partnership aims to provide and promote consumer education, including awareness of consumer rights and responsibilities, as mandated by the Consumer Act of the Philippines. This also allows the parties to collaborate on cases of consumer rights violations, bringing legal assistance and counseling closer to consumers.

Through this agreement, the UM Legal Advocacy Network (ULAN) and the UM-CLEP, will assist in resolving consumer complaints in DTI through mediation, adjudication, and appeals.

This partnership is part of UMCLE’s commitment to champion the rights of every Davaoeño.
