The Tagum City Police Station denied the reported grenade explosion in front of the Livestock Auction Center of the public market, a rumor that went viral over social media on Saturday night.
The incident reportedly resulted in the wounding of eight individuals.
In a statement posted over the City Government of Tagum Facebook page, Tagum police chief Supt. Jefferson Ayban said the explosion was caused by a motorcycle experiencing mechanical trouble.
“It was a mechanical explosion of the motorcycle’s engine that was parked in the area,” he said.
“The fragmented fiber objects from the engine resulted to the slight injury when they hit the eight persons,” he added.
The eight victims were already discharged from the hospital after their minor injuries were treated.
“We’re confident that it will not be reported wrong information to the public and that the incident was not due to any grenade or IED explosion,” Ayban said.
The Tagum police chief also reminded the public to be responsible enough and refrain from posting unconfirmed reports to avoid causing alarm.
