Tabula Rasa: Arts & Design track celebrates National Arts Month

Gearing toward artistic excellence, the Arts & Design Track of Davao City National High School conducted a year end Recital entitled Flarebouyanz:Fashion Walk and Layag 2019 last February 13 at CAP Auditorium. The matinee show started at 3 P.M. followed by gala show at 7 P.M.

The two events feature the creative products of the students per discipline. The first part highlights the hand sewn creation of Jessa C. Candia, Joan Nicole C. Mondigo and Darius Jireh H. Juson characterized by selected students. This is followed by Pinoy Superhero Chronicles, a nostalgic event that reminisced the early memories of comics in the 1980’s through cosplay.

Social documentaries have also found home in the first part. Antonnette Grace M. Loyola’s Panagat tackles about the life of a fishermen in Badjao Community at Matina Aplaya. Dave Andrew E. Conde’s Pagsubang sa Yuta is a documentation of the Matigsalog tribe in Marilog District at sitio Patag along with Sianne Gabrielle T. Camporedondo’s Balanse that features the Skylab vehicle in the said place. Kenneth E. Burcelis’s Iskabendyer has put the life of a night scavenger who is inspired by the words of a priest. The importance of giving life to what’s inconceivable in the eyes of the public is the role of the young documentarists.

The second part of the program made the audiences cheered as Princess Vanessa Labacar, the protagonist of Layag 2019 appeared. The story was about Ningning who was travelling to fetch the unfortunate characters victimized by society’s adversities.

These characters were casted according to a certain social issue they represented. Lumad Killings, Land Grabbing, Islamophobia, LGBT, HIV Cases, Bullying, Teenage Pregnancy, Mental Health, Rape, Poverty and Drugs, and Politics. Each segment was performed by different disciplines in the Track: Literary Arts, Dance Arts and Theater Arts. The mentors were John Riv E. Akiatan for Grade 11 Dance Arts; Yvonne B. Valdez for Grade 12 Dance Arts. Mark Roel B. Narreto holds the Theater Arts Class for Grade 11 and 12, while Maria Gliceria L. Valdez teaches Literary Arts for Grade 12.

Creating a production is a way of telling stories. The collaboration of students and mentors have made the event successful. The production was also supported by Devi H. Juson and Ma. Elena B. Gementiza and Jefferson S. Bangot as the Arts & Design Coordinator.     By Neil Teves
