ROUGH CUTS | It’s a different kind of season

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Administration (PAG-ASA) has declared lately that the La Nina is already exiting from the country. However, it has not categorically declared that the dry season has already started. And rightly so because in Mindanao it is still raining almost every other day.

The weather agency though, miserably failed to mention that between the months of February to May 12 there is a different season that impacts heavily on the entire country. Yes, and this is the season for the “pot calling the kettle black” and vice versa.

Indeed, during this season the politicians themselves, or their avid supporters – paid or not – are exchanging barbs. They chastised each other and call them by whatever names they can think of, all intended to destroy the credibility of the adversaries.

They refuse to see whatever good that has been done by any of the warring political personalities. Thus, they have to endeavor to heap alleluia to themselves knowing that the good that each of them may have done will never be recognized by either of them.

For now, we will just have to live with it. That is, the name calling, the attribution of evil on the political adversaries in this election season will continue to dominate Philippine society. And certainly it will not stop even after the last ballot of the 2025 midterm election is counted.

There may be a short lull, but without doubt the “pot calling the kettle clean” season will be back after a short while.

Proof? Just recall the now separate ways of President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. and Vice President Sara Duterte. The two were the sweetest pair running the government upon assumption of the President. Now the two are the worst of enemies, hurling almost every hour the harshest of adjectives describing each other.

In horse racing the animal owner and trainer know exactly the capacity of their race horses. It is for this reason that they venture into participating their horses in organized races like the ones at the San Lazaro Hippodrome.

Other than knowing the full potential of their race animals the horse owner and trainer also keenly study the capability of the other race participant animals. Thus, they know that their entry has equal chances of winning the competition.

Of course they also know that one big factor in winning the race is the ability of the jockey to stir the horse into harnessing its full capability.

This principle of course applies even in business operation specifically on those businesses whose merchandise is service.

Similarly, in horse racing an entry not performing according to expectation, need not be changed outright to get the desired result. The owner or trainer may look into the ability of the jockey; his capability to lead the horse to its maximum performance.

Is not reading between the lines in the preceding item not worth doing?

It looks like Second district Congressional candidate Javi Garcia Campos is not leaving any stone unturned in his effort to prove that any Duterte scion running for an elective position is undefeatable. Javi facing Omar Duterte, grandson of former President and Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and son of First district representative Paolo Duterte. Omar is the incumbent barangay captain of Buhangin.

Based on the many posts on Facebook, Davaoenos can see Javi, a second district incumbent councilor, tirelessly visiting barangays within the district he represents, meeting people and doing everything to erase the notion that he is from the elite and that he is not capable of becoming one among the common people.

We know that it is this perseverance of those Garcias who came ahead of him (Javi) in politics that made them last in the Second district’s political landscape.

While his raga for the position of Congressman in the Second is uphill, chances are he may get the unexpected reward if his quest is undeterred by certain hindrances..-
