Over 300 van drivers and operators volunteer for drug testing

THREE hundred and thirty-six members of the National Transport Coalition-Van Rental Group submitted themselves for drug testing at the organization’s headquarters along J.P. Laurel Avenue on Thursday, Jan. 23.

The initiative aims to ensure the safety of UV Express passengers and demonstrate the drivers’ commitment to a drug-free workplace.

“Those who test positive in the confirmatory test will be issued a show-cause order, which could lead to the revocation or suspension of their licenses,” said Atty. Vigor Mendoza II, assistant secretary of the Land Transportation Office (LTO) in a press conference on Thursday morning, Jan. 23.

Engr. Jean Jarralba, acting administrative officer of the Land Transportation and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) XI,  explained that a surprise drug test was conducted on Jan. 19, with confirmatory tests for those who initially tested positive.

“After the confirmatory test, we will recommend the individual for barangay drug clearing and rehabilitation programs,” added Irvin John Coderis, assistant regional director of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) XI.  “We will also file cases under Section 15 for the use of drugs.”

As of Wednesday, 96 drivers have passed the drug test, with one testing positive.
