THE OFFICE of the Civil Defense (OCD) XI together with the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) are set to conduct another ‘walk the fault’ activity in Davao City this September.
The activity aims to increase public awareness of the areas where the Central Davao Fault System passes through.
In a press briefing on Aug. 20, Ednar Dayanghirang, OCD XI regional director, said villages of Tamugan, Calinan, Riverside, Bangkas Heights, Los Amigos, Tugbok, Sirawan, and Binugao will participate, tracing the identified fault lines seen on satellites.
“If we have already traced it on the ground, we will put markings and signs so that everybody knows it is dangerous and belongs to a fault line. They will be warned not to build their houses there,” Dayanghirang said.
Dayanghirang said according to Phivolcs, homes are deemed safe when they are five to ten meters distant from the fault line.
In late November last year, the walk the fault activity was conducted in barangays Catalunan Pequeño and Catalunan Grande in Talomo District and Sto. Niño in Tugbok.
The three-day Walk the Fault campaign downloaded critical information to local leaders to prepare for a massive earthquake along the Dacudao Fault.
Dayanghirang stressed that among the five fault lines were Lacson, Tamugan, Dacudao, New Carmen, and Pangyan-Biao Escuela, were identified in Davao City alone.
The Dacudao Fault, a reverse fault of the Central Davao Fault System, stretches 18 kilometers running through barangays of Lamanan, Lacson, Dacudao, Calinan, Talomo River, Riverside, Los Amigos, Ula, Tugbok, Mintal, Sto. Niño, Catalunan Grande, Catalunan Pequeño, and Talomo.
