NTC XI warns vs. buying registered unopened SIM cards

THE NATIONAL Telecommunications Office (NTC) XI warns the public against purchasing new but already registered SIM cards after the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) found fictitious identities during the registration.

Nelson Cañete, NTC-XI regional director, said the NBI Cybercrime Division recently encountered SIM card registered with a photo of a monkey.

Ipahibalo namo sa katawhan nga kung mupalit ka’g SIM cards, ayaw’g palit og registered na. Ikaduha, mupalit ka’g SIM card nga ikaw mismo mag-register (We want everybody to know that if you plan to purchase a SIM card, avoid buying the already registered ones. Secondly, purchase a sim card that only you would register),” Cañete said.

Cañete also stressed that registering unopened SIM cards are punishable by law in line with the  Republic Act (RA) 11934 or the Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) Registration Law that “ensures consumers’ right to privacy and provides safety from text scams and other digital criminalities.”

He also calls for the immediate distribution of the Philippine National ID as this already underwent a deliberation process and could also be used as a valid identification for SIM Card registrations.
