A RENEWED call for peace by the 48th Infantry Battalion led to the voluntary surrender of several New People’s Army (NPA) members, Milisyang Bayan operatives, and supporters on New Year’s Day.
The significant development took place at the 48th Infantry Battalion headquarters in Maramag, Bukidnon.
Lt. Col. Gilbert Gomez, commanding officer, emphasized the significance of this surrender, especially during the holiday season. “Now is the time for peace, love, and new beginnings,” LTC Gomez stated.
“We invite you to reintegrate into society, reunite with your families, and embrace the opportunity for a better future. Thank you for trusting us with your decision,” he said.
The surrender was largely influenced by emotional appeals from the families of these individuals, urging them to leave the armed struggle behind and return home for a fresh start.
Recognizing the importance of reuniting with their loved ones, many responded positively to the calls for peace.
The individuals who surrendered included two members of the North Central Mindanao Regional Committee from Quezon, Bukidnon; six Milisyang Bayan operatives and supporters from Sitio Sunny Day, also in Quezon; and four members of the Dismantled Guerilla Front 53, Southern Mindanao Regional Committee, from Kibawe and Damulog, Bukidnon. One additional person surrendered from Pigcawayan, North Cotabato.
The battalion worked with Bravo Company, 72nd Infantry Battalion, the Philippine National Police (PNP), and local government units, including Quezon town Mayor Pablo Lorenzo III to facilitate the surrenders.
The operation also saw the surrender of underground mass organization members and supporters, who were encouraged by the sustained efforts of the Modified Community Sustainment Teams (MCSST) and extensive Civil Military Operations (CMO).
