Davao Region has not recorded any incidents involving Christmas lights since 2014, according to the Bureau of Fire and Protection (BFP) XI.
However, the BFP XI reminded the public against purchasing substandard Christmas lights.
Speaking in yesterday’s AFP-PNP press conference held at The Royal Mandaya Hotel, Fire Inspector Ramil Gillado, the operations head of BFP XI, said they continue to disseminate information on fire safety and the dangers of buying substandard products.
“Our community is aware already, ” Gillado said. “They know how to look for the ICC markings that are written on the package.”
Also, he said, buyers should also be careful in checking the wires of the lights, which should not be smaller than 1.5 mm. “Because if it is smaller than that, there is a tendency that it will overheat,” he further said.
Another thing to look out for is whether the plug is easily bent, which could result in loose connection. “It can ignite localized heat, which will continue until it becomes intense and melts the outlet. You will have short circuit resulting in fire,” he added.
“Let us celebrate the yuletide season by prioritizing fire safety and the tips in buying and the proper use of Christmas lights,” he said.
He added that homeowners should not leave any fire unattended and also, unplug any appliances for maximum safety.
