No rest for weary as Davao City gears up for Holy Week

THE DAVAO City Public Safety and Security Office (PSSO) is jumping right to the Holy Week preparations after successfully coordinating the Ironman 70.3, which drew over 1,700 participants from 49 countries.

“By tomorrow (March 28), I will be orchestrating a security and safety coordination meeting for Semana Santa,” PSSO head Angel Sumagaysay said in a media interview after Monday’s flag ceremony.

Sumagaysay said that, so far, the city has not recorded any communist-related incidents, local terrorist incidents, and significant crimes in March. This month’s most significant events included the Araw ng Dabaw and the recently concluded Alveo Ironman 70.3 Triathlon.

According to the police, the crowd that watched the race swelled to 20,000 at its peak. However, they did not record any petty or major crime during the course, which started at 3 a.m. and ended late afternoon on March 26.

Around 6,000 law enforcers, soldiers, and force multipliers were deployed to secure the Ironman participants and the crowd.

“I am thankful to everyone, and I am thankful to all who helped to disseminate the guidelines,” Sumagaysay said.

After the Ironman, the city is also hosting the national convention of prosecutors beginning Monday, March 27.

“Nakaprepare napod ang security nato (We also prepared security for that event),” Sumagaysay said.
