Mindanao Art Fair 2024 to highlight artists as ‘edge of nation’

THE MINDANAO Art Fair 2024, organized by Lawig-Diwa Inc. in collaboration with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and the National Committee on Art Galleries (NCCA-NCAG) is set to launch its 6th edition of prominent art exhibition, starting on Sept. 27 to Oct. 6 at SM Lanang, Davao City.

About 27 galleries from Mindanao and 8 from Visayas and Luzon are confirmed to participate in this year’s art exhibit.

During the PEP Talks forum on Sept. 10, Karlo Galay, Mindanao Art Fair organizing committee, said although the art industry has been struggling economically, the artists and Mindanao are still considered as “periphery of the nation.”

“We don’t usually pay enough attention to them economically, and at the same time, Mindanao is a victim of that experience. But we in the Mindanao art believe that that is a strength that we need to start celebrating, we are maybe on the edge, but we are also the edge,” Galay said.

Galay noted that the notion of the public that “art is for the rich people” must be eradicated, as anyone could purchase one through installments and other payment methods.

Kublai Millan, Lawig Diwa Inc. president and MinArt chairman, in a statement, said this year’s theme “Art on the Edge,” emphasizes the transformative power of creative expression that arises from the margins.

“The theme reflects our journey from the peripheries to the forefront of artistic excellence, celebrating how, even with limited resources, we continue to produce extraordinary art,” Millan said.

The art fair will also be simultaneously celebrated in Malita and Kidapawan. It will also introduce various art workshops for all.

The 2024 Mindanao Art Fair also joins the Museums & Galleries Month celebrations.
