Gaerlan blames drugs in dismembered body cases

Even as authorities are facing a blank wall in the cases of body parts found in the region, the police regional director pointed illegal drugs to be behind the crimes.

“I think only a person using illegal drugs can do that,” said Chief Supt. Manuel Gaerlan, the police regional director.

Gaerlan said he has directed his officials to conduct deeper investigation so they can pinpoint those responsible in these heinous crimes.

Sometime last month, a chopped up body was found in Island Garden City of Samal.

Weeks later, chopped up body parts were found in two areas in Buhangin District in this city.

Meanwhile, Sr. Insp Maria Theresita Gaspan, the spokesperson of Davao City Police Office (DCPO), said two sets of parents who reported missing daughters came to see the body found in Buhangin.
But none of them identified the victim.
DCPO Director Sr. Supt. Alexander Tagum earlier suspected the victim could have been killed somewhere and the body parts were only dumped in the city.
Chief Insp Nolan Genova, the medico legal of the PNP Crime Laboratory XI, said the body parts found in Barangay Cabantian and in Barangay Buhangin, both in Buhangin District, last week belong to one person only.

Genova said the victim sustained blunt traumatic injuries in her head, causing the death.

He said the victim could be 5 feet in height. The age is still to be determined.

The victim was wearing brown shorts and pink panty and bra.

“I also got samples for DNA determination as well as post-mortem fingerprint,” Genova added.
