FROM THE MAIL | Philippines in Turmoil: A Political Chaos or Political Circus?

BY CHRIST JOY R. ENOLPE

RECENT violent changes in Philippine politics have cast a shadow on the democratic institutions and governance of the Philippines, which puts it at a critical period. The dynastic feud between Duterte and Marcos has raised civic condemnation from the Filipino people, resulting in pressing questions about the nation’s commitment to justice and the rule of law. The arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte by the International Criminal Court (ICC) on charges of crimes against humanity has sparked debate both locally and internationally.

The Duterte supporters are now outraged and have expressed profound distress. They even started a rally and motorcades, from different regions all over the nation to show support and empathy towards FPRRD. Duterte’s supporters asserted that this move was politically motivated, along with Vice President Sara Duterte’s impeachment to deepen the domination gap between the dynastic families.

Other allegations include that this detention is used to cover up the issue of First Lady Liza Marcos after being allegedly detained by US officials in connection to the recent death of Rustan Commercial Shop Corporation heir Paolo Tantoco, asserting that this arrest is politically motivated and undermines national sovereignty.

Moreover, the critics welcomed Duterte’s arrest as a significant step towards accountability and progress to break free from a culture of political impunity and labeled it as “delayed justice.”

This historical moment in the context of Philippine politics garnered different reactions and opinions from both sides expressing their thoughts and sentiments on different social media platforms. This is truly a defining moment that shapes Philippine democracy—a true test of our constitution, not just the personal survival of a prominent politician.

Will the result of this trial reshape the future of Philippine politics? Or will it be another occurrence where power prevails over justice? The Philippine Nation is watching.
