Filipino Youth Leadership Program Empowers New Generation of Leaders in its Second Year

THE SECOND edition of the Filipino Youth Leadership Program (FYLP), which equipped young leaders from Mindanao to become agents of positive change in their respective communities, concluded on a high note on Sunday, Oct. 6, 2024, at the Regency Inn in Davao City.

A total of 20 fellows and six mentors immersed themselves in a four-day comprehensive and engaging leadership experience that combined theoretical learning with practical activities.

Throughout the program, all delegates participated in a comprehensive mentorship led by leadership experts, where they were paired with mentors to receive advice and support and cultivate essential skills and a leadership mindset as young leaders.

The delegates also gained an in-depth understanding of grassroots issues and the power of community-driven solutions through community immersion, allowing them to connect with diverse communities in Mindanao and create a positive impact both within these communities and beyond.

The main highlight of the leadership program was the Sustainable Project Presentation where delegates shared their original and innovative project that has a potential for positive impact within their community and beyond.

Their projects aimed at solving a problem and addressing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

The winning sustainable project is “Para sa PAMANA,” an initiative designed to harness the strengths and experiences of women from the Samahang Kababaihan sa Barangay Tibungco through capacity building, followed by setting up a bazaar to showcase their products and concluding with the turnover of materials.

This project was conceptualized by seven fellows: Jastine P. Suan, Philipina B. Gutierrez, and John Paul S. Cua from Davao City, as well as Mary Chris Presores from Cagayan de Oro City, Angeline M. Alcala from Cotabato City, and Michael Jomar D. Cubar from Camiguin Island.

In an interview, Jastine P. Suan, a youth leader from Davao City and a political science student at the University of Mindanao, shared his significant learnings from the program.

“As a youth leader, we are the last resort to make a pivotal change for the betterment of our country. That’s why we should be discerning and compassionate because this involves understanding in a wide range spectrum that fosters inclusivity,” he stated.

Suan also emphasized how crucial open communication is in the field of leadership.

“Another thing, open communication is also vital as this builds trust and collaboration that enable youth leaders to connect deeply with their communities and inspire collective actions,” he added.

In another interview, Hannah Aquino, executive director of the Filipino Youth Leadership Program 2024, shared her message for future youth leaders looking to make an impact in our country.

“As you embark on your journey as a young leader, remember that your impact extends far beyond your own community,” she expressed.

Aquino also emphasized the importance of pursuing one’s passion with dedication and enthusiasm as a youth leader.

“Discover what truly drives you and pursue your passions with dedication and enthusiasm. When you are passionate about your work, it becomes more meaningful and fulfilling,” she added.

This year’s FYLP is bigger than ever, marking its second year and the first time hosting an in-person program after its successful virtual launch in 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Contributed by Clifford James L. Danduan/Filipino Youth Leadership Program
