EDITORIAL | Our heritage, our city’s soul

October marks Museums and Galleries Month in the country, a time to highlight the role these institutions play in safeguarding our heritage. This celebration takes on a special significance as we trace the tapestry of cultures and histories that define the Davao region for centuries.

Davao City is known for our rich indigenous roots, colonial influences, and modern inflences. This is reflected in our art and the growing number of museums and galleries, mostly run by artists, who persevered despite challenges in the recent past. Although we still have to launch our National Museum inside People’s Park, we are certain that this will open a portal to our past that every Davaoeno should see and behold.

The Museo Dabawenyo, for instance, houses a fascinating collection of artifacts that narrate the city’s journey through time. From ancient pottery and traditional weaponry to historical documents and contemporary art, the museum offers a glimpse into the diverse influences that have shaped Davao’s identity.

But Museums and Galleries Month is not just about preserving the past. It’s also about inspiring the future. By engaging with art and history, we foster a deeper understanding of ourselves and our place in the world. These institutions serve as platforms for dialogue, creativity, and critical thinking, nurturing the next generation of artists, historians, and engaged citizens.

As our city continues to grow and evolve, museums and galleries remain vital to its development, serving as anchors of identity, reminding us of our roots while inspiring us to embrace the future.

Let us celebrate these institutions and the invaluable role they play in shaping a vibrant and culturally rich Davao City.
