DAVAO Occidental is set to become a hub for marine research with the proposed establishment of a Marine Research Center, a joint initiative by the Department of Science and Technology Region XI (DOST Region XI), Provincial Economic Enterprise and Investment Promotions Office (PEEIPO) and the Municipal Local Government Unit (MLGU) of Sarangani Island to advance the province’s capabilities in marine biodiversity and sustainable development.
A recent coordination meeting brought together key stakeholders from the MLGU Sarangani Island and DOST. The discussions, led by Mayor Adelan B. De Arce and DOST XI regional director Dr. Anthony Sales, focused on proposal development, detailed program plans, and the identification and prioritization of research sites. The engagement also emphasized the involvement of pentahelix stakeholders from industry, academia, civil society, and media.
The Sangguninang Bayan pledged their support by committing to craft a board resolution endorsing the establishment of the Marine Research Center, signaling strong local government backing for the project.
Following the meeting, stakeholders conducted site visits to the proposed research areas: Bolaye Cove in Brgy. Laker, Patuco Cove in Brgy. Patuco, and Tumanao Cove in Brgy. Camahual. These sites are expected to serve as pivotal research stations for exploring marine biodiversity and sustainable development practices.
This initiative is aligned with the Davao Occidental Research for Development Agenda (DORDA), reflecting a strategic approach to environmental protection and economic development. The collaborative efforts of PEEIPO, the Sarangani MLGU, and DOST will enable policymakers to make informed, data-driven decisions aimed at preserving marine ecosystems while fostering economic growth.
