Coops to operate coffee shop

THE city government is launching next month a coffee shop that will be operated by two entities, both connected to cooperativism, at the Library and Information Center on C. Bangoy Street.

The Coop Cup will be run by the Manuel Guianga and Sirib Growers and Employees Multipurpose Cooperative and the Model Cooperative Network, said City Cooperative and Development Office (CCDO) Officer-In-Charge Luzminda Eblamo.

Ebay said the entity \will sell coffee and other local products of the cooperatives as the office initially endorsed by the cooperative, but decided to include the network, which is composed of cooperatives not only in the city but other parts of the region.

“These cooperatives are in the consortium and will be supporting the MAGSIGE-MPC to run our Library Café,” Eblamo said, pointing out that the operations of the coffee shop will immediately start

Agripino L. Torres, Davao City Cooperative Council chair, the coffee shop will showcase the capability of cooperatives in running businesses.

“Pag sinabi mo kasing cooperative, social enterprise, parang ito yung pinaka hina pa in terms of business appreciation. But here, what we want to show is that if the cooperative sector is given the proper recognition, coops can manage a business and one of the showcases we are trying to develop is through this coffee shop,” said Torres who is hopeful that the venture will become successful social enterprise.

MCN Marketing Officer EJ Sumatra, who will manage the coffee shop said they intend to make the product affordable as they also plan to serve All-Day Breakfast.

“We will be serving All- Day Breakfast and the good thing is that almost lahat ng suppliers namin ay galing sa iba’t ibang coops. (We will be serving an All-Day Breakfast and the good thing is that almost all of our suppliers are from different coops),” he said.

Sumatra also added that the coffee shop will have a modern design and its architect’s perspective will be released to the public through the City Information Office once it is approved.
