THE COAST Guard District Southeastern Mindanao (CGDSEM) is prioritizing water safety and preventing vessel overloading as part of Hazards Prevention Month.
“We’ll be rigorously checking passenger vessels to ensure they comply with safety regulations,” said CGDSEM commander, Commodore Rejard Marfe, during a press briefing on Tuesday. “This includes verifying they are not overloaded and carrying no excess passengers.”
Marfe emphasized that inspections will target both vessel authorization and seaworthiness. “Our goal is to ensure vessels are authorized and in good working condition, guaranteeing the safety and security of passengers reaching their destinations.”
The Coast Guard will promote public awareness about vacation hazards and safe maritime practices on social media platforms.
Meanwhile, Marfe expressed his gratitude to Coast Guard personnel, auxiliaries, the media, and volunteers who contributed to the successful implementation of safety and security measures during the recent observance of Holy Week.
While he acknowledged that there were minor incidents, “overall, Oplan Biyaheng Ayos 2024 was a success.”
Marfe added that CGDSEM records show that Coast Guard personnel assisted a total of 80,192 passengers from March 24 to 31.
