ROSEGIE Ramos, an Alsons Power Group scholar, is powering her way to the 2024 Paris Olympics, following a solid podium finish at the 2024 Asian Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The 20-year-old Zamboangeña snatched the silver with an impressive 88-kilogram lift and then carried 102kg in the clean and jerk for a 190kg total, gaining her a bronze.
Currently ranked in the top five of the women’s 49-kilogram division in the world, the two-time Asian Junior champion is one of the 16 “power scholars” under the Alsons Power-Hidilyn Diaz (APHD) Scholarship Program. This collaboration, spearheaded by Alsons Power through its Zamboanga City-based subsidiary— Western Mindanao Power Corporation (WMPC), Olympic Gold Medalist Hidilyn Diaz, and the Philippine Weightlifting Association Inc., aims to produce world-class Filipino weightlifters, reinforcing the country’s efforts to secure more Olympic medals.
Ramos’ recent victory has greatly bolstered her chances of competing Filipino athletes like pole-vault sensation EJ Obiena and Tokyo boxing bronze medalist Eumir Marcial in the highly-anticipated Paris in July. She is prepared for another strong performance in an upcoming Olympic-qualifying event in Phuket, Thailand next month.
In addition to supporting training and providing gym facilities, among other resources, Alsons Power extends academic assistance to its APHD student-athletes, covering school fees, uniforms, and books. The Group’s APHD scholars are already making a mark in the weightlifting area, with three of them gearing up to participate in the National 5-in-1 Weightlifting Competition by the Philippine Sports Commission and the Philippine Olympic Committee Philippine National Games scheduled for May.
