ALL THAT MATTERS | Sparking a conversation

LAST SUNDAY morning, we joined runners, joggers, cyclists, and others enjoying the car-free day along the city’s scenic coastal road. As we observed the crowd, I realized that life’s simple pleasures are often found in silencing the daily noise that breeds only anxiety and stress.

This tranquil scene inspired the creation of this regular column, a space to cut through the present-day clutter and explore the issues that shape our daily realities and define our shared experiences as Davaoeños. It will focus on the human element at the heart of every story—a perspective we so desperately need in these times of anger and confusion.

Drawing on decades of journalistic experience, this column will strive to fulfill the core purpose of community journalism: to focus on the issues and stories that truly impact lives, while connecting with the community, acknowledging the complexities of the challenges we face, and giving voice to diverse perspectives.

More than just telling stories about the community, this column will provide a platform for the community to tell its own stories. This means showcasing local initiatives and highlighting the everyday heroes who make a difference. By listening to and reflecting on the lived experiences of its readers, “All That Matters” hopes to foster a deeper sense of connection within our community.

“All That Matters” aspires to be more than a column; it aims to spark meaningful community conversations.

As a newly retired community journalist, I now have the space to be candid about what is happening in our city. To quote Noam Chomsky: “No one will put the truth in your mind, it’s something you have to discover for yourself.”
