Higher Generation Charge Pushes Davao Light Rate Up by P0.0957/kWh this December

A SLIGHT uptick in the generation charge this December 2024 pushed Davao Light and Power Co., Inc.’s (Davao Light) overall residential electricity rate up by P0.0957 per kilowatt hour (kWh).

High electricity prices in the Philippine Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) in Mindanao – a venue for trading electricity as a commodity – increased the generation charge and subsequently, the overall rate to P9.2058/kWh from P9.1101/kWh last November. This rate applies to residential bills received from December 12, 2024, to January 10, 2025.

For a household consuming an average of 200 kWh monthly, this is equivalent to an increase of around P19.14 in their current billing,” said Davao Light Reputation Enhancement Department head Fermin Edillon.

Charges from power sources make up the generation charge which, like the transmission charge are pass-through charges that the distribution utility merely collects and pays to power suppliers and the transmission operator.

Meanwhile, the distribution charge is the only payment that goes to Davao Light. This was approved by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) and has not increased since 2013.

Since rates are uncontrollable and vary monthly based on market prices, the power utility encourages customers to use electricity wisely and efficiently, especially this holiday season when, historically, power consumption is high.

We also remind our customers to prioritize electrical safety this season,” Edillon added. “With all the gatherings and events in and around our homes, it is important to be vigilant and mindful in using electricity to avoid electrocution and electrical fire-related incidents. Applying safety and energy conservation practices can bring a joyful and meaningful Christmas and New Year.”

Davao Light customers are encouraged to check on electrical safety and energy conservation tips on its official Facebook page DavaoLightOfficial, and check the complete monthly rates at www.davaolight.com.

Davao Light, an AboitizPower distribution utility, aims to provide its customers with a front-seat vantage point regarding its services, including the sourcing and pricing of its electricity. This is in line with the mission of the company to deliver at the most reasonable cost, safe and reliable electric service to the people and businesses it serves.
