Lanterns of Positivity: PDLs of Iligan City Jail-Male Dormitory make stunning Christmas lanterns

IN TIPANOY, Iligan City, the persons deprived of liberty (PDL) at the Iligan City Jail-Male Dormitory are showcasing their craftsmanship by creating beautiful Christmas lanterns for sale.

The initiative is part of the facility’s livelihood program to provide PDLs an opportunity to earn money during the holiday season and support their families.

Under the program, PDLs have produced a variety of lantern designs, with prices ranging from P300 to P8,000. Orders are now being accepted, and customization options are available to cater to individual preferences.

Last year, the PDL-produced lanterns that were ordered by the local government of Iligan City, which were used to adorn the city during the Christmas season. This year, they continue to demonstrate their skills and creativity, bringing festive cheer to the community.

JCI Carmelo A. Corsame, city jail warden, emphasized the importance of this initiative: “Instilling the dignity of labor among our PDLs is crucial. This program not only helps them earn for their families but also provides them with a sense of purpose and pride in their work. By supporting their craftsmanship, we are fostering a positive environment that encourages personal growth and rehabilitation.”

The Christmas lanterns crafted by the PDL serve as a witness to their resilience and dedication. Each lantern is meticulously hand-crafted and assembled, reflecting the unique artistic talents of its creator. The funds raised from the sales will directly benefit the PDLs and their families, making a significant impact on their lives.
