EASTERN Mindanao Command (EastMinCom) chief Lt. Gen. Luis Rex Bergante commended the conviction of former lawmakers Satur Ocampo and France Castro, along with 11 others, for violating Republic Act 7610 or the Special Protection of Children Against Child Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act.
“This ruling is a crucial step in upholding the rights of our children and safeguarding them from exploitation and abuse,” Lt. Gen. Bergante said, emphasizing EastMinCom’s commitment to combating child trafficking and exploitation within their area of responsibility.
On July 15, the Tagum Regional Trial Court Branch 2 sentenced the group to a maximum of six years in prison for their role in transporting 14 minors from Talaingod, Davao del Norte, in 2018 without proper documentation or parental consent.
The group had claimed their actions were part of a fact-finding mission to support Indigenous Peoples (IP) children.
The case originated from a rescue operation conducted by the Talaingod Municipal Police Station and the 56th Infantry Battalion.
Despite their claims of innocence, the court found the evidence presented sufficient to prove the accused had violated RA 7610.
Castro and Ocampo have indicated their intention to appeal the decision. However, the ruling serves as a strong message regarding the Philippines’ dedication to child protection and upholding the rule of law.
