FILIPINO Millennials and Gen Zs are most concerned about the effects of climate change on their communities and families compared to other Filipinos according to the nonpartisan public opinion firm WR Numero. (See Figure 1)
In a March 2024 nationwide survey, WR Numero found that 79% of Filipino Millennials and 78% of Gen Zs reported concerns about the effects of climate change, compared to 69% of Gen X and 64% of the Baby Boomers and Silent Generation. These figures exceed the national average, with 74% of all Filipinos expressing anxiety about climate change and its effects on their lives. (See Figure 1)
Notably, among older Filipinos, 22% of Baby Boomers and the Silent Generation, and 18% of Gen X, are unsure about the negative impacts of climate change on their communities and families. (See Figure 1)
In this survey, Gen Z includes individuals aged 27 and younger (born after 1997), Millennials are aged 28-43 (born 1981-1996), Gen X comprises those aged 44-59 (born 1965-1980), Baby Boomers are aged 60-78 (born 1946-1964), and the Silent Generation are aged 79 and older (born before 1945).
Regionally, residents of Metro Manila report the highest levels of climate anxiety, with more than 80% expressing concern about climate change. (See Figure 2)
North-Central Luzon and the Visayas follow closely, with 74% of Filipinos in each region stating they are worried about the effects of climate change on their neighborhoods and households. South Luzon and Mindanao also show significant concern, with 72% in each region expressing anxiety about climate change. (See Figure 2)
Meanwhile, 15% of Filipinos in South Luzon are not concerned about the effects of climate change, the highest as compared to other regions. This is followed by Visayas and Mindanao at 13 and 12%, respectively. (See Figure 2)
This nationally-representative survey was conducted face-to-face among 1,765 Filipino adults, aged 18 years old and above, across the country between 12 and 24 March 2024. The nationwide survey has a ±2% error margin at the 95% confidence level. At the sub-national level, the estimates for error margin are ±6% for the National Capital Region, ±5% for the Rest of Luzon, ±5% for Visayas, and 5% for Mindanao at a similar confidence level. No individual or entity, partisan or non-partisan, has singularly commissioned the independent survey.
