23,422 pregnant women availed of prenatal care in Safe Motherhood program

OUT OF the 26,867 deliveries recorded in 2024, 23,422 pregnant women had benefited from 4 ANC (Antenatal care visits) equivalent to 87.2% availing of the City Health Office (CHO) Safe Motherhood program.

Dr. Sharlene L. Tan, district health physician for maternal service, advised women with high-risk pregnancies such as teenage pregnancy or those who are in their late 30s or 40s to be screened at health centers and private hospitals as well as to consult their OB (Obstetrician).

The Safe Motherhood program highlights the importance of prenatal care as it is the foundation of healthy pregnancy providing opportunities for early detection, management of potential problems, and keeping both the mother and baby healthy.

The program is available in barangay health stations and is intended to aid pregnant women. Pregnant women are provided with services on check-ups, laboratory screenings, and supplements namely Ferrous, Folic acid, and calcium tablets including tetanus and diphtheria vaccines.

Tan said that pregnant women with PhilHealth can use the Konsulta package for urinalysis and blood tests.

CHO intensified the program in 2022 as the agency recorded 22 maternal deaths in 2021 commonly caused by hemorrhage, eclampsia, or high blood pressure.

Davao City currently has two district hospitals (Infirmary level), seven birthing homes (BH), 18 district health centers, and 20 laboratory facilities.

The 18 district health centers also provide counseling on teenage pregnancy and family planning education for the youth along with their parents or guardians.
