10th Lunhaw Awards search for green initiatives

THE LUNHAW Awards again called for entries from individuals and community-based organizations with environmental initiatives promoting a greener Davao City.

The award accepts entries and submissions from various sectors, groups, schools, organizations, private and commercial establishments, non-government organizations, and government agencies with at least two years of established environmental initiatives.

The Lunhaw Awards are organized collaboratively by the City Government of Davao, the City Environment and Natural Resources Office – of Davao, the Davao City Agriculturist Office, the Davao City Water District, the Davao Association of Catholic Schools, Inc., and the Interfacing Development Interventions for Sustainability (IDIS) to recognize those who have demonstrated exemplary dedication to environmental preservation in the city.

“We would like to emphasize our call for entries sa (for the) Lunhaw awards because this is our way to prioritize this against our current combat sa atuang (in our) climate crisis,” Lemuel Manalo, Program Coordinator of IDIS, said.

Manalo also mentioned the necessity to discover practitioners in reforestation and green buildings, as well as those who set up solar panels and utilize renewable energy in their households and establishments. The said initiatives need to be recreated for the people to shift to an eco-friendly and sustainable lifestyle.

The official categories include green building/urban greening, forest-based initiatives, rural and urban organic farming, energy and water conservation, marine resources management, pollution control, and education and advocacy. In contrast, the special categories comprise the search for outstanding environmental advocates in Davao City, the search for outstanding local government units with environmental initiatives, and the search for establishments with permeable pavement design for parking spaces and walkways.

Participants may submit their entries for the Lunhaw Awards until July 17, 2023. In celebration of the Lunhaw Month of Davao City, the awarding ceremony will be held in September. Winners of the event will acquire a specially designed trophy by the distinguished Mindanaoan artist Kublai Milan, as well as cash prizes worth P10,000, organic goodies, certificates, and social media promotion.

Interested participants may access the application forms at idisphil.org and submit the completed requirements through their email, lunhawawards@gmail.com. At the same time, printed application forms are also available at the IDIS office, ALMACEN Building Catalunan Pequeno. Entries may also be submitted in person at the IDIS Office or the CENRO Office (Maa Motorpool) with all the required documents, including pictures and records about the environmental initiative.
