VP Sara heads release of 152 hawksbill turtle hatchlings

VICE PRESIDENT Sara Duterte joined the Davao Light and Power Co., Inc. and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in releasing 152 endangered hawksbill turtle hatchlings at Aboitiz Cleanergy Park in Punta Dumalag, Matina Aplaya on Sept. 12.

Duterte said this type of activity is crucial to teaching the neighborhood’s kids and residents their role in environmental preservation.

Most of the turtles fished out of the ocean have health problems because they ate plastics. So, it’s crucial for kids to understand the lifecycle and how fragile their lives are),” Duterte said.

Fermin Edillon, Davao Light and Power Company reputation enhancement department head, said only about 1 in 1,000 hatchlings survive to adulthood.

Established in 2014, the eight-hectare Aboitiz Cleanergy Park is a location for the conservation of biodiversity and an ecological preserve, run by Davao Light, a subsidiary of AboitizPower, and the Aboitiz Foundation, Inc.
