IN A powerful display of unity against communist terrorism, hundreds of residents in Bukidnon and Davao condemned the CPP-NPA on their anniversary, March 29, through simultaneous rallies conducted in far-flung barangays, sending a clear message of rejection.
Major Mark Anthony Tito, Public Affairs Officer of the 10th Infantry Division, reported that barangay officials, peace advocates, indigenous cultural communities (ICCs) and their tribal warriors, people’s organizations, religious groups, businesses, youth sectors, and the general public all participated.
The rallies, held in four barangays – San Fernando, Bukidnon; Barangay Magwawa, Santo Tomas, Davao del Norte; and Barangay Salapawan, Paquibato District, Davao City – saw a symbolic burning of CPP-NPA flags. Candlelight vigils also honored those who fell victim to the group’s violence.
Lieutenant Colonel Rowel M Tabas, Commanding Officer of the 89th Infantry (Makatao) Battalion, highlighted the sentiment: “The people have spoken loud and clear. Their placards denounce 55 years of unjust killings, property destruction, extortion, and other lawless activities that disrupt peace in communities.”
The rallies also showcased successful government programs. Datu Lito Gambay, an IP leader and former NPA supporter, expressed gratitude for the 89th Infantry Battalion’s support after his surrender. He emphasized the positive impact of government-led livelihood projects, schools, infrastructure development, and rebuilding efforts that empower communities to start anew.
The 10th Infantry (Agila) Division leadership, emboldened by the community’s resolve, pledged to intensify operations against the remaining CPP-NPA terrorists in Bukidnon and prevent their resurgence in the Davao Region.
“This decisive action aims to ensure lasting peace and security for the people,” it said.
