More than 500 displaced workers at the Roxas Night Market were enrolled in the Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD) program under the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), an official said.
Presidential Commission for the Urban Poor (PCUP) supervising commissioner for Mindanao and TUPAD program in charge Norman Baloro said the 502 enrolled displaced workers, including night market vendors and masseurs, started working yesterday under the TUPAD program.
Baloro said the TUPAD beneficiaries are now working with the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) in improving the Roxas Night Market through landscaping, cleaning, painting, and tree planting in the area.
They will work until April 29, 2020 or a period of 30 days, excluding weekend and holidays, Baloro said in a text message to TIMES.
He said the workers will be receiving a salary of P386 per day or a total of P11,580 for the whole period.
They will have an eight working hours a day, from 8 a.m. to 12 noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Baloro said the beneficiaries will closely be monitored by the PCUP, DOLE, and the local government, through its City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), Public Employment Service Office (PESO), and City Security Unit (CSU).
TUPAD is a community-based package assistance from the national government thru DOLE. The program provides emergency employment for displaced workers, underemployed and seasonal workers. This gives the workers a minimum period of 10 days, but not exceed to a maximum of 30 days, depending on the nature of work to be performed.
Last Thursday, Mayor Sara Duterte shut down the market for indefinite period due to COVID 19 threat.
The mayor immediately bared the commitment of the city government to help the displaced workers affected by the closure.
