Tragic Monday

  • One dead, 5 injured, and houses burned in separate fire-related incidents

A 19-YEAR-OLD laborer died after he was trapped in a warehouse fire in Purok 8, Upper Communal, Tibungco on Monday morning.

In the report of the Bunawan Police Station, the casualty was identified as Jefre Parba Debalucos. For now, the Bureau of Fire and Protection (BFP) 11 is still investigating what caused the fire.

Meanwhile, another fire gobbled 11 houses at Purok Masea, Barangay Leon Garcia around 9:30 a.m. on the same day. The latter incident also triggered a road crash when a firetruck responding to the distress call sideswiped a tricycle, causing minor injuries to five people.

According to the report of the Davao City Police Office (DCPO), the fire started in the house of Rodolfo Siman. The flames quickly spread since the houses were made of light materials.

Immediately, firefighters of the Bureau of Fire and Protection (BFP) XI and other volunteers responded to the scene and declared the area under control at 10:21 a.m. But they remained at the scene for a considerable time to ensure nothing reignites.

While the fire itself did not cause any injury, a responding firetruck on the way to the scene sideswiped a tricycle and hurt the driver and four passengers.

According to the Davao City Police Office (DCPO) report, at around 10 a.m., the incident occurred near Petron gasoline station along R. Castillo Street. The slippery road condition reportedly contributed to the collision, causing the tricycle to fall on its side.

Three of the injured victims were brought to the Southern Philippines Medical Center while the remaining two insisted they needed no medical attention.
