This first-of-its-kind project in the municipality addresses the challenges of solid waste management while introducing a more engaging and rewarding way for residents to recycle. By integrating an incentive-based system, the initiative encourages the community to adopt more sustainable waste disposal habits.
Encouraging Recycling Through Rewards
As a pilot project, the reverse vending machine has been placed in the Municipal Hall, where residents can deposit plastic bottles with barcodes, For every 12 bottles collected, users earn a 50-centavo reward, which they can either redeem or donate to a chosen charity. This system motivates consistent recycling habits and fosters a sense of environmental responsibility among the community.
TMI’s Commitment to Sustainability
As part of its environmental responsibility efforts, TMI actively participates in various environmental programs in Nasipit and surrounding communities, including tree-planting activities, coastal cleanups, and partnerships with local stakeholders for waste management campaigns. The reverse vending machine further builds on AboitizPower’s long-standing commitment to environmental stewardship, particularly in communities where its assets operate.
Plans are already in place to scale the initiative by deploying additional reverse vending machines in key locations across Nasipit, nearby communities, and within other plants of AboitizPower’s Transition Business Group in Mindanao. The initiative also aims to expand the types of recyclable materials accepted while enhancing incentives and expanding community education campaigns to increase engagement.
Driving Lasting Impact Through Innovation
By introducing innovative waste management solutions, TMI continues to strengthen its role in building resilient communities—one that fosters environmental responsibility and empowers residents to be involved in sustainability efforts. Through collaborations with local stakeholders, TMI remains committed to finding meaningful ways to create positive change, ensuring that progress extends beyond power generation and into the heart of the communities it serves.
