TEU: traffic accidents drop 35% in first quarter

ROAD INCIDENTS in the city significantly shrunk by 35% in the first quarter of 2024, according to the Traffic Enforcement Unit (TEU) of the Davao City Police Office (DCPO).

TEU chief Lt. Col. Dexter Domingo reported 1,325 accidents from January to April, compared to 2,029 during the same period in 2023. 

The number of vehicles involved also dropped by 27%, with 2,569 recorded this year compared to 3,516 last year.

“We hope this downward trend continues,” Domingo told reporters during the AFP-PNP press briefing held at The Royal Mandaya Hotel on Wednesday, May 22.

Most incidents occurred from 2 pm-4 pm (16%), and 4 pm-6 pm (13%).

Meanwhile, the high-risk areas where accidents mostly happened were Carlos P. Garcia (31%), MacArthur Highway (22%), Sasa (14%), Tibungco (11%), and Bunawan (10%).

Domingo attributed the decline to several factors, including intensified traffic operations, speed limit enforcement, road clearing, and anti-drunk driving enforcement (RA 10586).
