Around 300 shoppers, youth advocates, and Boy Scouts participated in the global initiative to switch off non-essential lights for an hour during Earth Hour 2025 conducted by SM Lanang at the North Wing Grounds on March 22.
Since its opening in 2012, SM Lanang has been actively participating in the global movement in solidarity with millions of environmental advocates who are taking a stand against climate change and promoting sustainable practices.
From 8:30 pm – 9:30 pm, SM Lanang switched off non-essential lights within its premises as it celebrated Earth Hour together with environmental advocates from the Davao City Youth for Green Environment and Boy Scouts of the Philippines Davao City Council.
The total energy saved during the one-hour switch-off in 87 SM Supermalls nationwide was equivalent to 319,759 smartphones charged or 1.4 tons of waste recycled.
SM Lanang’s sustainability efforts go beyond its Earth Hour participation as it champions responsible waste management and environmental stewardship through its Trash to Cash recycling market, which happens every first Friday and Saturday of the month.
SM’s Trash to Cash program is a nationwide initiative transforming SM malls into a sustainability hub where individuals can exchange recyclable waste for cash. This initiative, part of SM Supermalls’ Waste-Free Future campaign, has been a long-running program since 2007 that encourages waste segregation, recycling, and environmental awareness while also benefiting communities financially.
In 2024 alone, the initiative successfully collected more than 12 million kilograms of recyclables, generating a total of over P28 million in earnings for participants.
